Beam Analysis Module

Enter a section's dimensions, its steel grade, the support condition, and the loads it carries, to check bending, shear, and deflection against Eurocode 3 capacity limits.

Standards used on this page

  • BS EN 1993-1-1:2005+A1:2014 (Eurocode 3, Part 1-1) — §6.2.5 bending resistance, §6.2.6 shear resistance
  • UK National Annex to BS EN 1993-1-1 (γM0 = 1.0)
  • Deflection limits reflect common UK design practice (non-contradictory complementary information, e.g. SCI guidance) — Eurocode 3 itself does not mandate a specific numeric limit
Scope of this tool: covers Class 1, 2, and 3 sections only — Class 4 (slender) sections need an effective section modulus that this tool does not yet calculate. Lateral-torsional buckling is not checked here (that assumes the compression flange is adequately restrained) — this will be addressed in the Column Buckling & Torsion module.
Note on accuracy: as with the other modules, this tool assumes sharp (unfilleted) corners. Self-weight, if included, uses a standard steel density of 7850 kg/m³ applied to the calculated cross-sectional area — an approximation, not the section's exact catalogued mass.
